The SB 293 was designed to protect solar customers by addressing transparency and accountability within the solar industry. It establishes strict regulations on solar installation companies to ensure consumers receive clear and honest information about solar agreements. The bill requires key contract terms—such as costs, timelines, and warranties—to be highlighted on the contract’s cover page and verbally communicated to customers.
Solar companies are also mandated to record these verbal communications and maintain them for at least four years to ensure compliance and transparency. Additionally, the bill enhances data protection and mandates that contracts be provided in the customer’s preferred language when negotiations are conducted in a language other than English. Violations of these requirements can lead to contracts being voided, and solar companies can face severe penalties for non-compliance.
The rights of Nevada’s renewable energy customers are codified in Assembly Bill 405 (AB 405) of the 79th (2017) Session of the Nevada Legislature at Sections 23 – 25. These provisions are referred to as the Renewable Energy Bill of Rights.
